How to find a VIN from a UK registration

A vehicle identification number (VIN) identifies an individual vehicle. A modern VIN usually has 17 characters. The registration number is the number shown on the plate and can change, for example when a private plate is transferred.

Where to look for your VIN

Check the V5C logbook and compare it with the VIN on the vehicle. Depending on the make and model, it may be visible through the lower windscreen, on a label inside a front door, or stamped on the body or chassis. Your vehicle handbook can help locate it.

How a registration-to-VIN lookup works

Start with the current UK plate. If a free DVSA preview is available, compare the vehicle details with what you expect. A paid lookup requests the VIN held in the vehicle data provider’s record. If a VIN can’t be supplied, RegReveal issues a full refund.

Why might a VIN be unavailable?

A provider may lack a complete record for a particular vehicle. Older vehicles can use a different chassis number format. A recent registration or a private plate change can also make it harder to match records. Check the vehicle and its paperwork if the result is missing or different from what you expect.

VIN lookup and MOT history

A VIN helps identify the vehicle. If you need its MOT test results, use the free GOV.UK MOT history service. A RegReveal VIN report covers identification and the available specifications.
